In Tajikistan toughened penalties for drunken driving

Avesta.Tj | 01.02.2012 | Deputies of the Tajik parliament, during a regular session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon in Dushanbe today approved amendments to the Code of the Republic of Tajikistan "On Administrative Offences".


Speaking on the issue, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan Saidhon Jurakhon noted that the amendments provide for increased penalties for persons who drive a car while intoxicated, as well as drivers who do not have rights to manage the road.


"The situation on the roads of the country remains alarming. Over the past 10 years were over 15 thousand traffic accidents, which killed more than 4.4 thousand people, injured 17.7 thousand people. That is, each year in road accidents killed an average of over 400 people injured and maimed 1.7 thousand people ", - said the statistics Jurakhon.


According to him, only last year in accidents involving drunk drivers killed 42 people. "We also were arrested around 3 thousand people drive a car without a driver's license," - said the deputy minister.


"The amendment of driving drunk, punishable by a deprivation of the rights to drive up to two years (currently one year)," - said Jurakhon.


Also, he said increasing the amount of fines prescribed for individuals for driving while intoxicated. "Previously, the penalty for this type of offense was 350 times the minimum rate, but now those caught driving while driving drunk will be fined 700 minimal indices (one minimum rate is 40 TJS)," - said Jurakhon.


According to him, the penalty for driving without a license increased from 20 to 30 minimum rates and in case of a repetition of the offense, the driver will be required to pay a fine of up to 50 times the minimum rate.
