Tajikistan, EBRD Discuss Cooperation Issues

Avesta.Tj | 18.11.2014 | Tajik President Emomali Rahmon received here Monday Mr. Suma Chakrabarti, the President of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), according to the Tajik presidential press service.

At the meeting the sides discussed the issues related to bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the EBRD.

Over the years, the bank signed agreements, worth more than 700 million U.S. dollars, with Tajik government and its commercial banks for implementation of investment projects in various sectors of economy, as well as for capacity building and institutional development.

Currently, the EBRD is investing more than 500 million U.S. dollars in Tajikistan, in the fields like energy, water utilities, banking system and private sector.

The sides expressed their satisfaction with the long-term cooperation between Tajikistan and the EBRD. They also agreed to strengthen and expand cooperation in future.

It was highlighted that the EBRD will further support Tajikistan in the socio-economic development, reducing the risk of external influence on the national economy.

Suma Chakrabarti was elected as the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in May 2012 for the next four years, from July 3 2012.

EBRD has started its operation in Tajikistan, since 1992. During this time, the bank has concentrated on financial and private sector development, as well as agribusiness, energy and municipal infrastructure, transport, telecommunications and general industry.

The bank’s strategy for Tajikistan takes into account the fact that Tajikistan is a priority recipient of grant co-financing and TC to alleviate serious affordability constraints, in particular in the rural areas, and to improve the institutional capacity to narrow the transition gaps and ensure timely implementation of Bank-financed projects.
