Tajikistan fully supports India, Pakistan to become SCO members


Avesta.Tj | 10.07.2015 |Tajikistan fully supports India and Pakistan to become members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Tajik President Emomali Rahmon said at the 15th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State on Friday.


"Tajikistan voices its support for India and Pakistan becoming full members of the organization,” Rahmon said.


He expressed hope that Iran will be able to join the SCO as soon as possib

le. "I express hope that Iran will also join the list of full-fledged members of our organization in the nearest future", Rahmon said.


"We also welcome a decision on granting Belarus an observer status and giving Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal a status of dialogue partners,” Tajik president added.


The SCO, founded in 2001, currently has six member states -- China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. It also has Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan as observers and Belarus, Turkey and Sri Lanka as dialogue partners.


In September 2014, Pakistan and India officially submitted applications for SCO membership.


There is also request from Iran on gaining full membership in the SCO. Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, as well as Cambodia, Syria and Egypt, the Maldives, a number of other countries are requesting observer or partner status.
