Sharp Statement of Islam Karimov on Rogun Project

Avesta.Tj | 07.09.2012 | President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov declared at the press conference following talks with President Nazarbaev in Astana about the necessity of international assessment of projects of construction of Kambar-Ata-1 hydropower plant in Kyrgyzstan and Rogun hydropower plant in Tajikistan.

These projects were designed in 1970-80-s. Much changed since that time, including construction norms regarding hydropower plants, Karimov said.

The President of Uzbekistan stressed that it is important for Syrdarya and Amudarya downstream countries to know how much water will come to them upon construction of the dams, which will be 275 meters high in Kyrgyzstan and 350 meters long in Tajikistan.

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev expressed hope these issues would be resolved collaboratively and beneficially for all Central Asian states.

"This will be discussed more, but we are sending fraternal greetings to our neighbors and brothers, who are upstream saying that those who are downstream, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, feel water shortage most of all, every person feels it in his life”, - the President of Kazakhstan stressed.
