Tajikistan sends official extradition request to Turkey for Kuvatov

Avesta.Tj | 16.01.2015 | Tajikistan has sent an official extradition request to the Turkish authorities for Umarali Kuvatov, the leader of extremist organization Group 24, Tajik Interior Minister Ramazon Rahimzoda said at a press conference on Friday.

Kuvatov, who was detained for violation of rules of stay in Turkey in December 2014, is particularly accused of committing economic crimes and for attempting to organize a mass disorder in Tajikistan.

Since the the Group 24 was ruled as the extremist organization and banned in the country, Tajik authorities arrested three its supporters, said Rahimzoda, adding that eight others were detained in Russia at the request of Tajik authorities, and will be extradited to Tajikistan soon.

Tajikistan's Supreme Court banned the opposition organization Group 24, led by fugitive Tajik business man Umarali Kuvatov, in October, 2014.

Umarali Kuvatov is a former advisor to the daughter of President Emomali Rakhmon.

Kuvatov fled Tajikistan for Moscow in the summer of 2012 and announced the formation of Group 24 against the Tajik government.

He was arrested in Dubai in 2012 following an extradition request from Tajikistan on charges of business frauds, but was released from the detention center in Dubai in 2013.
