Russian officer charged with beating waiter in Tajikistan


Avesta.Tj | 02.02.2015 | Prosecutors in Tajikistan have charged a Russian officer who beat a man near the 201st military base's unit in the southern city of Kulob, Radio Liberty’s Tajik service reported on Monday.

The suspect, idenified as Captain Chemizov, is suspected of severely beating a waiter at a restaurant in Kulob last week.

Last summer, two Russian officers from the 201st military base's unit in Dushanbe, the capital, were arrested on suspicion of killing a local man, Rahimjon Teshaboev. That investigation is continuing.

The Russian military base, which was officially opened in Tajikistan in 2004 under an agreement signed in 1993, and hosts Russia' s largest military contingent deployed abroad.

A total of some 7,000 Russian troops are stationed at three military facilities collectively known as the 201st military base.
