Leader of Tajik opposition Group 24 repotedly killed in Turkey

Avesta.Tj | 06.03.2015 | The leader of Tajik anti-government Group 24 Umarali Kuvatov was killed in Istanbul of Turkey, the Turkish Haberler news agency reported on Friday.

Kuvatov was shot dead in the head by unknown person at Fotehi Street.

In January, Tajikistan has formally asked Turkey to extradite fugitive opposition politician and businessman Umarali Kuvatov.

Kuvatov is wanted by Dushanbe on fraud charges. His Group 24 political organization was banned in October 2014, when the government labelled it as an extremist group.

Tajik authorities had earlier blocked hundreds of websites after Group 24 used social media to call for a mass antigovernment protest in Dushanbe.

Kuvatov and three associates were detained in Turkey in December 2014 for violating visa regulations.

Eight Group 24 members have been detained in Russia and were reportedly extradited to Tajikistan, and that three others were arrested in Tajikistan.

Kuvatov, who once had close ties to President Emomali Rahmon's family, left Tajikistan in 2012.
