Tajikistan destroys over 40,000 bushes of wild hemp

Avesta.Tj | 17.06.2015 |Tajikistan destroyed more than 40, 000 bushes of wild hemp in an anti-drug operation since May, authorities said Wednesday.


About 18,000 bushes of wild hemp were discovered and destroyed in Tajikistan’s eastern region of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), the Tajik Interior Ministry said.

Tajik police officers also revealed and destroyed bushes of wild hemp in Pahor Village of Shugnan district and Rohvar Village of Vanj district – 931 and 17,000 bushes respectively.

The action was carried out within the ongoing counternarcotics operation "Poppy 2015”, it added.

Launched on May 20, the Poppy operation will run through Nov. 30, 2015. The main objective of the operation is to detect and destroy areas cultivating drug-containing plants in the Central Asian nation.

The anti-drug operation, held annually in Tajikistan, aims to strengthen cooperation and coordination among law enforcement bodies to curb production, transportation and sale of drugs in the country.
