Landslides hit E Tajikistan again

Avesta.Tj | 28.07.2015 |The hot weather caused new landslides and flooding in Tajikistan’s eastern region of Gorno-Badakhshan, a spokesman for the Tajik Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense Orif Nizomov said Tuesday.

"The hot weather caused the Khingob River levels to rise in the Sagirdasht village of Darvoz district,” said Nizomov.

He said that the flooding destroyed 90 meters of highway connecting the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) and Dushanbe via the Hoburabot Pass.

The landslides have also destroyed 15 meters of roads in the Ishkashim district and a bridge in the Alichur village of Murgab district, a spokesman said.

Tajik authorities have allocated land plots in Shugnan district for 83 families, whose houses were destroyed by recent mudslides and floods.

The construction of 70 houses has already started.

Tajikistan, where 93% of the territory is taken by mountains, faces mudslides and floods regularly, especially at the times of glaciers’ intensive melting.
