New Social-Networking Site - VIPNET.TJ Launched in Tajikistan

Avesta.Tj | 24.07.2014 | Tajikistan has launched a new social networking site - VIPNET.TJ expected to become an alternative to the Russian site Odnoklassniki, Ganijon Salomzoda, the founder of the new site told on July 23.

The Tajik site VIPNET.TJ prohibits the publication of extremist materials, the use of foul language, the uploading of materials violating Tajik traditions, and materials violating copyright law.

We'll recall that the disagreement sparked during an online discussion on the popular Odnoklassniki social network led to a deadly attack in Tajikistan. 11th-grade student at a secondary school in Dushanbe was stabbed to death in the center of the Tajik capital on May 30.

The attack took place after the two students had been arguing about an unknown subject on the social network.

For unknown reasons, on July 18 several Internet providers in Tajikistan started blocking access to Odnoklassniki. Communications officials claimed they were unaware about the blocking of the website. Odnoklassniki was used by Tajiks to share information and materials about different topics, including some thought to be sensitive for Tajik authorities.

As well the video-sharing website YouTube has been blocked in the country since the beginning of June.
