Cotton Harvesting Starts in Khatlon Province

Avesta.Tj | 20.08.2014 | Harvesting of cotton has been begun in five cotton-growing districts of Khatlon province in southern Tajikistan, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Wednesday.

Cotton has already matured at some farms of Kumsangir, Yovon, Shakhritus, Nosiri Khusrav and Jilikul districts in particular.

This year, cotton was sowed on more than 177 thousand hectares. It is expected to collect more than 400 thousand tons of cotton for a season.

Last year, 395 thousand tons of cotton were harvested from 192 thousand hectares.

Cotton had always been one of main items of Tajik export: therefore, cotton growing was always the priority among all other crops. At best times, Tajikistan produced up to 800,000 tons of cotton.

Cotton makes an important contribution to the agricultural sector and the national economy. Cotton accounts for 60 percent of agricultural output, supports 75 percent of the rural population, and uses 45 percent of irrigated arable land.

At the national level, it is an important source of export earnings and tax revenue. Tajikistan is the world’s fourth largest exporter of cotton, and there is strong demand on international markets for its high quality product.
